Huntington house undergoing renovation catches fire, heavily damaged
Article from MassLive.com:

HUNTINGTON – A house on Pond Brook Road that was being renovated sustained heavy damage in a Friday afternoon fire, Fire Chief Gary Dahill said.

Firefighters responded to 28 Pond Brook Road at about 1 p.m. to find the right side of the 2-story home engulfed in flames, he said.

No one was injured, but the building sustained fire damage to the first and second floors and attic, he said.

It took an hour to knock down the flames and then another hour to look for remaining hot spots. Firefighters had to cut holes through the walls in search of flames, he said.

Dahill said the cause has not been determined officially but it looks to have been started by an electrical malfunction. The state fire marshal was expected on scene to held determine the cause, he said.

The building was midway through a renovation and was not occupied, he said. The owners were staying in a tent on the rear of the property.

While most of my previous columns focus on residential new home construction and its impact on the economy, I think it’s time to take a look at some of the recent accomplishments of a very prominent industry affecting homeowners — home renovation.

It may surprise some of you, but the home-renovation industry is worth about $ 66 billion and accounts for 56 per cent of all residential construction investment across Canada — a fact that’s been overshadowed by the success of the new home construction market here in the GTA.

Much like new homes, though, the renovation industry is changing. Following the success of the highrise market in 2007, not to mention last year, homeowners and buyers in the GTA are shifting gears and embracing condominium living. But while the talk of the town focuses on new condo construction, condominium renov…………………continues on yourhome.ca
Beach house renovation tips
Article from Washington Post:

The Burns house in Bethany Beach, Del., needed updating for a new generation. Here are some remodeling ideas from Erica Burns, who served as project manager as well as designer for the project.

Prepare for the unexpected and figure out how to turn it into a plus. A discovery of water damage under the cedar siding forced the family to replace it. They chose an easy-care fiber-cement siding that will require no painting, a huge improvement. This offered a chance to reconfigure and enlarge a sundeck on the second floor, so now there’s a place to sit with ocean views.

Enhance the spaces where you spend the most time. Erica noticed the kitchen and screen porch were the go-to places for the family to hang out. She made the porch bigger and added an extra bar stool to the expanded kitchen island. In the living room, she enlarged the raised hearth where people like to sit and chat.

Accommodate technology. To prevent rooms full of power cords and chargers sticking out of every outlet, Erica planned built-in charg…………………continues on Washington Post

Wood County Board members will make the final decision Tuesday on clearing the way to borrow $ 3.6 million to remodel Edgewater Haven Nursing Home and refinance an outstanding loan.

In April, County Board members approved both borrowing issues during their monthly meeting. A resolution being considered Tuesday would give approval to the details of the borrowing, which will be available after the county puts the bonds out for sale today.

If the plan is approved, the county will borrow $ 2.855 million for remodeling Edgewater Haven Nursing Home, a project that includes demolishing the front portion of the building, built in 1928. The project also involves moving the therapy department out of the basement and building a new chapel on the ground floor. The current chapel is in the basement.

The remaining $ 800,000 of the $ 3.6 million borrowing would be to refinance a loan taken out to pay for a communications towers project the county completed in 2011.

Other issues being considered Tuesday include:

» Considering contracting with CAP Services to administer the county Community Development Block Grant Revolving Loan Fund

ASU renovation projects both under way and in the works
Article from News Courier:

Though founded 190 years ago, the buildings and campus of Athens State University look remarkably good for their age.

Despite the aesthetic high points, the school is in the process of taking steps to ensure the school and its historic buildings are both beautiful and structurally sound for years to come.

Renovations are under way on the Beaty-Mason Home on Beaty Street and will be followed by extensive renovation work to McCandless Hall. ASU spokesman Guy McClure said while it may seem like there’s a flurry of work being conducted around the campus, renovations to the school are a continual work in progress.

The Beaty-Mason Home, built in 1826, also serves as the school president’s home. While viewed as an example of the Greek architecture found in many of the city’s historic homes, the home is also in need of repairs, including: stabilizing the brick foundation, exterior walls and roof; repaving driveways; repairing sidewalks; and installing new electrical wiring and HVAC systems.

Officials with the school’s foundation board estimate the repair work to cost about $ 1.8 million, though more than $ 500,000 has been raised for the project.

EAST DOVER — In the small village where it seems everyone knows everyone, two residents are trying to revive its even smaller commercial district.

About a month ago, John Sprung and his partner, Amiee Pritcher, finalized paperwork for the purchase of two iconic buildings, the East Dover Post Office and General Store and the village’s Scale House.

As the unofficial entrance to Dover, the buildings have been part of life in the small community for more than a 150 years.

“If we lose what little we have, we’ll lose our community,” Sprung said.

Pritcher added, “If we hadn’t bought these buildings they would have just been condemned.”

The plan is to renovate the General Store as close to how it looked in the 1800s, and restore the foundation of the Scale House, transforming it into a local art gallery, putting both on the National Historic Register.

They also want to install a rock wall and flag pole and plant several gardens along and near each of the buildings. But Pritcher and Sprung said when they went before the town’s economic development committee to ask for $ 10,000 to help with beautificat…………………continues on Brattleboro Reformer
UVM’s presidential abode loses its ivy and ’70s kitsch
Article from Seven Days:

It feels a little voyeuristic taking a pre-renovation tour of Englesby House, the 9000-square-foot mansion on Burlington’s South Williams Street that will soon be home to incoming University of Vermont president Tom Sullivan and his wife, Leslie. University presidents are the closest thing to crowned royalty in higher education. Accordingly, the masses always enjoy a peek behind the French doors to see how the sovereigns live.

Englesby House, which was built in 1914 for Burlington physician William Englesby, was willed to the university by his widow, Maude, upon her death in 1956. For two years the house served as a dorm for 27 women, before it was given over to the university president in 1958.

Today the house, which sits on 1.1 beautifully landscaped acres on the southeast corner of College Street, is in dire need of upgrades and repairs. Most have been deferred because the house hasn’t been used as a residence for more than a decade. In the interim, it’s served largely as a booze-and-schmooze venue for official ceremonial functions. Perhaps that explains the jumbo, subterranean hot tub. More on that later.</…………………continues on Seven Days

Mediterranean home on El Camino Del Mar offers unparalleled ocean views
Article from San Francisco Chronicle:

Of the many advantages that come with living in the community of Sea Cliff, one aspect sets it apart from the rest.

“Sea Cliff is most known for its views,” said Max Armour of TRI/Coldwell Banker. “It is unusual because it’s on the outside of the (Golden Gate) Bridge, and when you eye the view, there is a feeling that you are truly on the ocean.”

The property at 738 El Camino Del Mar, priced at $ 6.995 million, provides an instant panoramic view of the bridge as well as Baker Beach, the Marin headlands and the Presidio.

“There are views from every floor,” Armour said. “Perfect and unobstructed on each level, they only get nicer and nicer. The view from the master bedroom is the nicest I have ever seen. You’re lying in bed, then wake up and there’s the bridge.”

Armour said the feeling becomes immediate when one pulls into the private driveway that leads into the back of the house and is soon exposed to the rear garden view.

“In San Francisco, it is hard to find a south garden with a northern view,” he said. “In most houses, the north side off the street is steep or the garden is usually facing far north. There are few h…………………continues on San Francisco Chronicle
