East Atlanta Family To Be Featured On “Mega Dens” Home Renovation Show
Article from Patch.com:

Known for years as the up-and-coming neighborhood, East Atlanta Village has had its fair share of do-it-yourselfers who’ve taken homes in need of some TLC and brought them up to showroom shape.

A lucky few have had some help.

And so it is with the Tankersley family who, this week, has been putting time, talent and lots of elbow grease into renovating the entire downstairs living area of their Newton Avenue home with interior designer Anitra Mecadon.

Mecadon is host of “Mega Dens” on the DIY Network, the cable outlet focused on issues and topics centered on folks making renovations themselves.

Her show and crew spent this week at the Tankersley’s home helping them redo their dining, sitting/television room and some renovations in the kitchen.

The transformation is slated to air in a June 10 episode.

For the Tankersleys, getting on the show was a bit of luck.

“We were at a party at a friend’s house about six months or so ago and my wife was talking to one of their friends who works as an extra for commercials and such,” Reid Tankersley, told East Atlanta Patch.<…………………continues on Patch.com

Baeumler: Decisions about home renovation don’t need to be tough
Article from Toronto Star:

It may not be as exciting or sexy as a new kitchen, but maintaining the exterior of your home – roofs, soffits and foundation – protects your investment.

DREAMSTIME PHOTO ILLUSTRATION

People are strange.

We know that the way we live is damaging the environment and negatively affecting our health and well-being and yet we continue to produce more and more disposable products that are quick and cheap to manufacture, but need frequent replacement.

Many of us will spend our hard-earned money on replacing these cheap products instead of spending more money up front on quality products that will last longer and operate more efficiently.

With that in mind, it’s no surprise that a lot of people have their priorities backwards when it comes to their homes. An example that I see on a regular basis is someone with a luxury car in the driveway of an old, tired, inefficient home in various states of disr…………………continues on Toronto Star

Miami Dolphins help finish home renovation for Navy Vet
Article from 7Online WSVN-TV:

HOLLYWOOD, Fla. (WSVN) — Miami Dolphins players and several other volunteers and organizations put the finishing touches on a Navy veteran’s South Florida home they helped renovate.

A month ago, Leslye Lea, her 79-year-old mother, who suffers from colon cancer, and 16-year-old daughter were living in a home with a leaky roof and in desperate shape from top to bottom.

Thursday, Lea, a Navy veteran, walked into her house transformed by three weeks of labor and the kindness of strangers. “This is day and night. I said to my mom, ‘It looks like it’s going to rain today, I could go for just sitting outside on the patio and just listening to it rain and don’t have to worry about getting buckets,’” said Lea.

Volunteers tackled every problem the home had, even putting on a new roof. Miami Dolphins players were on hand to help out with the last few repairs needed. Rooms To Go donated furniture and Best Buy donated two new televisions. “Just to see how much has been done, people putting the effort and just the way it came out, it’s really nice,” said Miami Dolphins player Tyrone Colver, “and today to go in and see the finished project with the furniture and stu…………………continues on 7Online WSVN-TV

Gardening course to be offered in Rumford
Article from Lewiston Sun Journal:
Published on Friday, Jan 27, 2012 at 12:12 am | Last updated on Thursday, Jan 26, 2012 at 10:10 pm

RUMFORD — To help teachers and other community members have successful gardens, whether at school or job sites, the Oxford County Cooperative Extension will offer School Gardening 101: A Garden Primer.

Preregistration is under way for the free five-week course that starts Feb. 29. Classes will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesdays at RSU 10′s Mountain Valley High School in Rumford.

“This course is for people who either run school garden classes or community gardens, so it’s helping them have successful gardens,” Barbara Murphy, extension educator, said Thursday in Paris.

Gardening success depends on a basic understanding of soil, pests and diseases, and crop choices. But school and community gardens face the additional challenge of volunteer management, fundraising and keeping the garden growing through summer, Murphy said.

“This is more for the nuts and bolts of getting schools and community gardens over the hurdles, like the real challenges of having a school or community garden,” she said.

Gardening advice is being offered to green-fingered enthusiasts living in Cornwall.

Inclusive activity

The Eden Trust has been working with the community library to help create a community garden in the city.

Renovation slump hits building supplier
Article from The Canberra Times:
Building products distributor Alesco has warned its full-year profit could fall by more than a third because of the downturn in home renovations.

The construction, mining and home products provider said trading activity in December and January had been difficult and it does not expect an improvement in the detached housing and renovation sectors in the short term.

As a result Alesco fears its net profit, excluding significant items, will be 30 to 35per cent lower than the $ 15.3million it posted in 2010-11.

The warning came as the company, which makes garage doors, cabinets and window products, unveiled a lift in first-half profit yesterday.

Its net profit rose to $ 7.2million in the six months to November 30, from $ 1.8million in the previous corresponding period.

But revenue fell 5.1per cent to $ 274.6million.

Chief executive Peter Boyd said home renovation activity slowed significantly in the first half compared with the same period in 2010. ”This was particularly evident in the new detached housing segment which we estimate was down approximately 10per cent for the six month period ended November 30, 2011,” he said.

Alesco’s reven…………………continues on The Canberra Times

Microclimate gardening
Article from The Wenatchee World Online:

Mary: A maxim often utilized by WSU Master Gardeners when dispensing gardening advice is “right plant, right place.”

Brad: I think on the hierarchy of WSU Master Gardener maxims, it’s actually right under “If life deals you tomatoes, make Bloody Marys.”

Mary: If only that were true. That is, however, a nice segue into how gardening enthusiasts can learn to use microclimates in their gardens so that they can put the right plants, in the right places. Doing so, however, requires the gardener to look well beyond the USDA hardiness zone designation for their plants.

Brad: Now, we’re not saying that knowing the local USDA hardiness zone isn’t important. It’s just that it answers only one basic question: what is the minimum temperature that this plant can withstand? For gardeners to make sure that the plant they are placing in a particular spot is going to thrive, they need to take so much more into consideration. And that’s where understanding the particular microclimates present in your garden comes in handy.

Mary: Essentially, a microclimate is the climate of a sma…………………continues on The Wenatchee World Online

Don Davis takes a look at gardening trends
Article from Lynchburg News and Advance:
By: Don Davis | Lynchburg News and Advance

You may notice certain gardening trends involving plants, products and practices. Some are new; some are not.

Economic conditions continue to fuel widespread interest in growing fruits and vegetables. Other reasons for planting food crops are flavor, nutrition and convenience.

Organic gardening is more popular than ever. More gardeners are growing plants with organic fertilizers and attempting pest control with products of a biological nature rather than with conventional pesticides.

Some examples include spraying neem for Japanese beetle control and using dipel for worms on broccoli. Similarly, you can control root disease with a biological fungicide such as Rootshield.

Sales of organic seeds are greater than ever before………………….continues on Lynchburg News and Advance

Broomfield Enterprise Gardening Jan. 22: Journal is a gardener’s best friend
Article from Broomfield Enterprise:
I hate to admit it, but my garden information consists of an unorganized collection of sticky notes, scraps of paper, plant tags, notes on calendars and articles ripped from the newspaper. Because of this mess, I end up floundering when trying to remember exactly where I planted the Stargazer lily, what tulip variety didn’t grow and when we had the snowstorm that broke the limbs. It’s time to invest in a garden journal.

Each garden is unique with different soil, different microclimates and different water. Because of this, plants respond differently in your garden environment than in your friend’s down the street or across town. A garden journal is a wonderful tool for storing all the bits and pieces of trivia specific to your individual garden and landscape.

Weather and precipitation are key factors in gardening. Recording the rainfall and weather conditions will help answer questions that arise later in the year. Did a late spring freeze cause the reduction in fruit production this year, or was it some other factor? Last year there was more powdery mildew on the lilacs; was it because last spring was cooler and damper, creating a better environme…………………continues on Broomfield Enterprise
